Your Quick Guide to Creating an Accessible Bathroom

August 31, 2020

For most people, bathrooms are easy to use, however for people with special needs, regular bathrooms are not as functional as they need to be.

Adapting yours or building another bathroom to fit the needs of a family member with a disability is going to make their lives a whole lot easier. Read on for your quick guide to creating an accessible bathroom…

Install Accessible Basins

Installing accessible basins will allow someone using a wheelchair to wash their hands and face without having to put a lot of effort to reach the sink. Electronic taps are an ideal accompaniment for this type of bathroom improvement.

Ensure the Entrance Door is Wide Enough

Bathrooms are not the only room in the house that you will need to modify to ensure everybody can move around comfortably. Replacing old doors with wider models is essential if you live with a wheelchair user. Wide doors will enable them to move around the house without damaging the wheelchair or harming themselves. The standard measure for accessible doors is 36 inches or more.

Install Essential Grab Bars

Grab rails are not expensive but can be extremely useful to people with special needs. Install them in the shower and next to the toilet to ensure everyone can move around with support.

Invest in Customized Baths if Showers Are Not an Option

Although showers are a great option, specialized baths will ensure nobody in the house lacks comfort. They’re wider than regular baths and the height is adjustable, which makes it easier for people with special needs to use them.

Get an Adapted Toilet for More Comfort

Adapted toilets are crucial for your new bathroom. There are various models on the market such as suspended and ergonomic toilets. Some people may require toilets that incorporate a bidet and a toilet in one unit.

The main objective in creating an accessible bathroom is to ensure that each person can function comfortably on their own by supplying them with the necessary equipment to be independent.
