WHAT IS BIOPHILIC DESIGN + HOW CAN IT IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH?

October 15, 2015

Humans desire a connection to nature.

Natural environments provide emotional and mental restoration, along with the opportunity for our minds to rest.

Biophilic design reconnects us with nature and allows us to live and work in healthy spaces with less stress and more well-being.

The design of this bathroom brings in a view of nature, which creates a calming and restorative experience for the users.

Our physical responses to nature include relaxation of muscles, lower blood pressure and reduced stress.

Biophilic Design has always been a relevant part of our lifestyles as it takes into account the health and well-being of people in a particular space. The natural environment surrounding the space plays an important a role as well.

Overall, Biophilic Design creates spaces that are inspirational, restorative, healthy and functional.

Every project has its unique challenges, and as designers we look for opportunities to incorporate the concept of biophilic design to enhance the wellness of individuals in a given space.

In our Villa Colombo project, geared to Alzheimer patients, our objective was to create a space that was conducive to relaxation and reduced agitation.

We introduced a large-scale built-in aquarium to provide a beneficial form of audio-visual therapy.

The soothing motion of the natural aquatic life helps bring balance to patients’ psychological state of mind.

If your environment does not allow you to be in the presence of nature, remember that incorporating elements such as images, textures and colours reminiscent of nature produce a similar effect.

We designed nature themed graphics for the walls and selected textures that mimic the natural environment to bring a sense of balance in the space.

Humans have been decorating living spaces inspired by nature since the beginning of time. While the science of biophilia is an evolving field, we are firm believers in restoring the human-nature connection in the built environment.

As more people move into cities, the well-being that comes from biophilic design becomes more of a necessity in our daily lives.

Our goal at Ambience Design Group is to design the most effective learning environments, healing environments and working environments.
