Sometimes the circumstances will not allow us to change the date of moving to another city, and that comes with several disruptions. Adults might have to take time off from work to deal with packing and transportation, but schoolchildren should have as little interruption in their studies as possible. Whether you have booked reliable movers to pack your belongings or only have them transporting your things, try to make sure that your kids can easily access important school materials during the packing and moving process. Here’s how to efficiently pack their room while keeping school activities on track:
1. Involve your children
Have them pack personal items like books, toys, and decorations so they know where everything is when it’s time to unpack. This can also help them gain more sense of control during moving and thus reduce the stress for them.
2. Sort through belongings
Before packing, have your schooler go through their room to identify items they no longer need. Declutter old toys, unused clothing, and school supplies from previous years; consider donating clothes or toys they’ve outgrown and storing seasonal items that won’t be needed in the immediate future.
3. Prioritize school materials
Make sure notebooks, textbooks, and any other school-related materials are packed last so they remain accessible during the move. Place them in a clearly labeled box for easy access.
Pack the separate bag with everyday school supplies like pencils, pens, notebooks, calculators, and any electronics (laptop, tablet).
If your kid is working on any long-term projects or assignments, pack these separately and keep them accessible. Ensure they can continue working without disruption during the move.
4. Pack by zones
Break the room into sections such as the desk, closet, shelves, and bed area. Start with areas that won’t be needed immediately, like bookshelves or less-used clothing, and pack these first. Keep special mementos, such as childhood keepsakes or favorite photos, together in one box for safekeeping. For fragile items like trophies, medals, or artwork, use bubble wrap or tissue paper and pack them in sturdy boxes. Label them as fragile to ensure careful handling.
5. Organize Clothing:
For hanging clothes, wardrobe boxes will keep clothes wrinkle-free and organized.
For folded clothes, use labeled bins or suitcases.
Keep a few sets of everyday clothing easily accessible to avoid digging through boxes right after the move.
6. Pack electronics with care
Devices like computers, game consoles, or tablets should be packed with their original boxes if available, or securely wrapped in bubble wrap and placed in padded boxes.
Don’t forget to pack all cables and accessories in labeled bags. Place phone, tablet, or laptop chargers in a clearly marked bag to avoid the hassle of searching for them right after the move.
Label each box
Each box should have a description of its contents and note which items are needed sooner (e.g., “School Supplies” or “Everyday Clothes”). This will make unpacking easier and more organized.
