“We were so excited about our new home, particularly as it had so much space. But, the basement was a blank canvas that we couldn’t decide how to use.” – Sally.
Being a young, hard working couple who likes to kick back with friends and family on occasion, one of our first thoughts was to open most of it up as a room for entertaining our fiends and family, with a smaller space reserved for a wine cellar. A ‘man cave’ was also mentioned – albeit fleetingly.
We realized it required serious thought and after some discussion, decided practical rooms would be best as they would work for the future just as well as the present. Our options included:
Gym
Utility room
Children’s play area
Guest suite
Home cinema
Games room
So, while the entertainment space was attractive, instead we went for a utility room and a guest bedroom with en-suite facilities. A gym also received some serious attention during our discussions, but we’re lucky enough to live near a gym and a park, so already have plenty of work-out options.
Less exciting than our initial ideas, but way more practical. We can’t take all the credit for our final decision and if you need help planning your perfect home, take a look at this detailed guide to successful basement remodeling for further tips and inspiration. It certainly helped us!
