How does the space we work in affect creative performance?

May 12, 2016

Sometimes we sit down to work with the best intentions, but the physical space we are in is less than inspiring. It’s true that the spaces we often occupy greatly affect our psychological well-being and creative performance.

Today’s blog will share some tips of how you can improve your workspace for more creativity and productivity.

1.     Take ownership

Organizing your own workspace and making your own decisions about the space has been linked to improved productivity.

2.     Choose rounded furniture

Choosing a layout and furniture that is curved and rounded is linked with positive emotions, which is known to improve creativity, productivity, and collaboration. On the other hand, sitting in straight lines triggers feelings of individuality.

3.     Take advantage of light

One of the simplest ways you can improve your environment to enhance performance is by choosing the right lighting. In a home office, this can be achieved through unique task lighting and interesting fixtures.

Different colours and light levels have different psychological effects. Installing a lighting system that allows you to control the hue and brightness of the room to suit the kind of work you are doing. Dimmed light improves creativity while bright light improves analytical and evaluative thinking.

4.     Let colour empower you

Choosing a colour that best suits your kind of activity also enhances performance. Blue and green enhance performance on tasks that require creativity and coming up with new ideas. Red enhances performance on tasks that require attention to details. Find out which colour works best for you in our Human Responses to Colour Guide.

If you’d like to keep things simple while following the hottest trends, grey is a color you might want to include in your home office. Being able to focus on your work might be a challenge when placing an office into the comfort of your own home; the color grey is a neutral element which can be incorporated to promote concentration and creativity. Plus, the variety of shades and hues of grey give you the flexibility to use the color in many ways! Adding a comfortable grey desk chair or some decorative seating cubes to add a theme or texture to your space are just a few ways you can incorporate a splash of grey in your office!

5.     Invite textured wallpaper and furniture

Textured wallpaper is known to be more durable verses a solid painted wall and abstract patterns can encourage creativity. Textured office furniture is another way to introduce creative elements in a workspace.

6.     Make use of plants and windows

Another simple way to enhance your workspace is investing in plants. Plants help lower stress levels as well as reduce pollution levels.
