With the new year upon us, it’s a great time to take a look at your living space and figure out what can stay and what needs to go.
In the last year, 31% of Canadians reported that they would be investing in a kitchen remodel, with 25% going for a total renovation of their living room. Browse through some of 2019’s top interior design trends to figure out what you can do to change up your design scheme a bit and then skip the overpriced design features and craft your own DIY embellishments in order to add a touch of elegance and taste to any room in your home.
Repurpose Old Appliances and Materials
Upcycling, or the creative reuse of materials, has become one of the hottest trends in Canada following recent efforts by the country’s Upcycle Movement in educating citizens about the importance of not sending more waste to landfills. Upcycled interiors are not only sustainable, but they’re delightfully charming and unique, and repurposing old features of your home’s interior is a great way to revamp your space at little to no cost for you. You can turn old cabinets into unique serving trays by moving to handles to either side of the cabinet and painting them a different color. Or, you can take five to ten old books you have lying around, stack them up in a unique way and drill a hole in the center where you’ll place a dowel. Attach a tabletop and you’ve got yourself a unique book side table.
Create Your Own Embellishments
Rather than totally rehaul the space, you can opt for adding new, elegant touches of flare by creating your own embellishments. Existing pillows that you love and will fit in with Canada’s 2019 design trends can be revamped by adding a touch of fringe, for example, that can quickly be sewn on using fringe or old blanket material you have lying around the house. If you are particularly fond of flowing drapes that frame your windows, you can sew on cute, creative little accent designs in a contrasting but complementary color. Learning how to sew, in general, is a great way to enhance the look of your home as you’ll be able to repair, enhance and transform a lot of interior design features in every room. Seeing as it’s the holiday season as well, it’s a great time to invest in a machine to learn how to sew properly. Once you’ve got the hang of it, the world (or your home) is your oyster.
Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help
Even though DIY projects are a great way to enhance the look of your home at a fraction of the costs you’d rack up in purchasing all-new decor, it’s important to understand that it’s never too late to ask for help. A new year is a great time to invite a professional interior designer into your home in order to figure out what you can change and improve upon in order to meet changing design trends and ensure you’ve got one of the hottest homes for the entire year to come.
