We all know how stressful the entire relocation process can get. The physical task of actually moving your things from your old home to your new one is draining enough. That’s why we all need to draw up a checklist of things to do when relocating.
Packing your things ahead of time, hiring movers, taking care of utilities, and forwarding your mail are par for the course when you’re moving house. Here are some other things you should include in your moving into a new home checklist.
Take measurements of your new house before moving in.
It’s one thing to see the home you’re moving into and all its rooms and outdoor spaces on a website. It’s an entirely different thing if you actually see it in person.
For one thing, you need to know about most of your new home’s dimensions. You will want to make sure if your new home has a wide enough doorway and a big enough living room for that massive couch of yours to fit. You might also want to take a closer look at your kitchen and see for yourself if it has enough space for all your pots, pans, and appliances.
So bring your steel tape, then measure everything you need to measure to ensure that all the things you’re moving from your old home will have a place in your new one.
If everything checks out, then go ahead and move. However, if getting all your things through your new home’s door isn’t possible, or there simply isn’t enough room for all your belongings, then you have two choices: You can leave behind some or most of your big pieces of furniture and appliances in your old house, or you can have some renovations done in your new home so you can take all of your treasured belongings with you.
Check out the interior design and see if your things will blend in.
Space isn’t the only consideration when moving into a new home.
You also need to see if your furniture, appliances, and furnishings will actually go well with your home’s interior design before bringing them all with you.
By doing this, you can, at the very least, get rid of certain elements that won’t blend in before you make the move. Or, you can hire an interior designer to make your new home and your old things mesh beautifully.
Check out the systems in your new home.
You need to know if everything in your new home is working. So take the time to inspect the cooling and heating units in your new home. Check the plumbing as well for leaks. Test all electrical switches and outlets, and locate the circuit breaker to make sure you can easily reset it when needed.
These are just some of the many things that you need to take care of when relocating. You can add more items to your checklist as you see fit, and make your move a little less stressful in the process.
