7 Secrets to Create a Calm and Serene Home

June 21, 2021

Wouldn’t it be nice to come home from a busy day and just relax on the couch? After all, a house is meant to be a sanctuary where we can just breathe and feel safe.

However, there is more to having a serene and calm home than a comfortable couch and some aromatherapy. Listed below are seven tips to give your house a zen vibe.

Say goodbye to clutter

We believe that you cannot have a tranquil home when it is cluttered. When your house is crowded with all sorts of items and knick-knacks, it can make your home look smaller than it is, and you may feel claustrophobic.

If you feel like your house is crowding in on you, it’s certainly not a calming feeling. So if you want to make your home more relaxing, before you do anything else, make sure that you clean and declutter first, especially with the help of a professional cleaning service.

Choose subdued colors

Color plays an essential role in interior decoration. That’s because it gives off the vibe that you want in a space. Hence, it can affect your mood. So when choosing the best color for parts of your home, you should take color psychology into account.

You can change the room’s color depending on the main activities that you want to accomplish in the room. For example, if you have a study or office space in your home, colors that help you sleep and relax may not be the best.

For your bedroom where you want to be as serene and relaxed as possible, light blues and whites are an ever-reliable choice.

Use lights with warm color temperature

Speaking of color, another way you can make parts of your home warmer and more inviting is by choosing the right lights.

Some lights give off a cool feeling while others are warmer, so choosing the right light fixture can affect the coloring of a room. It’s all again a matter of which room you want to have a specific color temperature.

It’s best to invest in warm color temperature bulbs for every part of your home. That’s because the bluish-white tint alternative is going to make your home look more clinical than serene.

For places that you might want to relax in, like your bedroom, look for fixtures or warmer bulbs and offer a more golden wash.

Consider using aromatherapy

More and more people are incorporating some element of aromatherapy into their homes to help them relax. If you want to add something soothing to your home, you can do the same.

There are all sorts of aromatherapy accessories that you can incorporate into your home. An aroma diffuser or a humidifier that can use essential oils is an example.

Another famous example would be scented candles. More people are using scented candles as an addition to their at-home spa experience for times they need to relax.

Incorporate cozy elements

Choosing home accessories that make you feel cozy is one way to ensure that you can feel calm and serene in your home. In addition, you can look into interior design styles that best soothe a peaceful and tranquil home.

You can add knitted throw blankets on your sofas to make them cozier, along with matching throw pillows. Adding rugs and carpets along your floors is another way to make your home cozier, especially if you have hardwood floors.

If you want a more involved addition to your home, fireplaces will make your home a lot cozier. Who wouldn’t want to cuddle up near a fireplace during the cold season with a warm drink by your side?

Bring the outside in

Bringing in more live plants in your home will make your home look fresher and more appealing. No matter your home’s style or the theme of your interior design, fresh plants will elevate the look by a lot.

Of course, you need to make sure that you can adequately take care of these plants so they live longer.

Carve out a quiet space

Even though your home should be your oasis, you might still need a specific area or part of your home dedicated to nothing else but quiet activities.

It can be a simple corner in your bedroom or a dedicated room somewhere else in your home. Either way, carving out a quiet space in your house for an activity that relaxes you, like meditating or reading, can help.

You can then incorporate some other calming elements that we’ve already covered into your quiet space to make it as relaxing as possible.

You don’t need to do something grand to have a calm and serene home. Sometimes, changing the wall color and decluttering is enough. But if you have the budget, you can start with the tips listed above.
