5 Ways to Make a Small Room Look Bigger

March 30, 2021

Having a small room can be very frustrating. Small spaces are easily cluttered, they aren’t the easiest to organize, especially when you have large furniture with limited storage space. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

For starters, you can hire a professional interior designer to help you decorate and organize your room to maximize the space. If budget allows, you can also hire professional home remodeling services to help you renovate and increase your interior storage space. What’s more, you can always make a small room appear bigger without having to knock walls down. Here is how:

  1. Go with bright colors

Colors play a huge role in creating an illusion about the size of a room. Interior designers argue that medium shade colors such as maroon, beige, brown, and green make a room look smaller. That is why bright colors such as white and grey should be your small room to-go colors. Creating a contrast between two different shades also works best for small rooms. For instance, if you are painting a kitchen, you could go for light colors such as white for the walls and dark colors such as royal blue for the cabinets. Creating that kind of blend ensures that the dull colors do not overpower the light ones. For the living room and the bedrooms, you can go all white from the ceiling to the walls to create an illusion of a high ceiling.

  1. Use floor-to-ceiling curtains

Curtains that partially cover the walls and extend from the ceilings to the floor make the room and windows look bigger because they draw your eye focus upwards, making the ceiling appear more elevated. To achieve this illusion, you need to hang curtains about 4 inches above the window’s frame. For rooms that don’t have moldings, hang your curtains approximately 6 inches above the window. When selecting curtains and sheers for your home, avoid multi-colored curtains that have horizontal detail as they make rooms look more tiny. You should use sheers and curtains that have vertical stripes to add visual height to your room.

  1. Go big on decorative pieces

It is not advisable to use small accents as décor in a tiny room because they appear more as clutter than art. Invest in a few larger pieces that make bold statements across your small room. When decorating items such as the dining table, dresser, coffee table, or nightstand, ensure that you go for single art pieces. Place them at the center for an optimal synthetic appeal. But if you want to save both in storage and shipping costs then Ready-to-Assemble Cabinets can be a good addition to your space. It is the best way to save money without sacrificing quality.

  1. Decorate with mirrors

Mirrors bounce back light so that your room looks bigger and well lit. The best place to hang a mirror to create this illusion is next to a window – the window involved appears bigger than it is. Moreover, hanging mirrors in small rooms will also make it feel like there is another room beyond the mirror. You can also create a make-believe window using a large mirror. To create this “fake” window, you need to cut and frame mirrors in the shape of a window. This approach will prevent you from feeling claustrophobic in your home.

  1. Strategically place light fixtures

Cleverly placed lighting fixtures will help you create an illusion of space in these, among other ways:

  • Use tall and thin lampshades as opposed to the common big-shade lamps. That economizes on your floor space while giving you maximum table-lamp experience.
  • Replace circular-based lampshades with square-based ones because the latter fits into small spaces better than the former.
  • For small rooms with high ceilings, shift the eye’s focus from the small floor area to the high ceiling by suspending a long pendant from the ceiling.
  • Replace your single ceiling bulb with multiple light sources distributed evenly around the circumference of the room. A single ceiling bulb focuses most of the light to the center of the room, making it look smaller. Multiple lights on the walls create the illusion that there is more room behind the light source.

Conclusion

There you have it! The simple and affordable changes recommended above will transform your living space from frustrating to fabulous. But that’s not all: You need to learn the art and discipline of organizing and maximizing storage spaces to not only make your small space look bigger but also make it more spacious.
