3 Types of Floor Plans: What Are the Key Differences?

April 27, 2023

When building or renovating a house, one thing to consider is the floor plan. Do you want something that offers a traditional plan, something more contemporary or modern, or even something a little in between? The floor plan your home has can truly make all the difference in how you enjoy your space.

Here are three types of floor plans to consider.

  1. Closed Concept

A more traditional floor plan option would be a closed concept. In a closed concept plan, all rooms are closed off from one another, including the kitchen and living room.

For many people, a closed concept means a cozier feel with more privacy. It also means more wall space, which allows homeowners more walls to decorate. Another benefit of a closed floor plan is that furniture or wall colors don’t have to match from room to room since all rooms are closed. This means more flexibility and creativity.

For some folks, however, closed concepts can seem stuffy, confusing, and make the house feel smaller overall.

  1. Open Concept

Most homeowners these days look forward to an open concept floor plan, which is a more contemporary or modern option. In an open concept space, you can expect to see fewer walls and multiple rooms that are essentially connected rather than separated by a wall.

Open concept is common with living rooms and kitchens, as well as with a master suite and an en suite master bathroom. Some may even have an open office or dining room area in their home.

Open concept plans can sometimes be difficult to decorate as all rooms open to one another need to match. Walls typically have to be painted the same color, and furniture should look simple in all adjacent open concept rooms. For instance, someone may not want dark brown cabinets in their kitchen if their kitchen opens up to their living room, which has white furniture.

While open concepts can also offer less privacy, a benefit of having your space opened up is that it offers better airflow, makes navigating a house easier, and even create a space that is more convenient like in the event that you’re hosting a party and wish to communicate with your guests in the living room while you’re cooking in the kitchen.

  1. Custom Floor Plan

If you like both closed and open concept floor plans, an alternative option would be to go with a custom floor plan. This way, you can customize your floor plan exactly as you like it, getting the best of both worlds.

There are many floor plans offering options featuring a closed concept, open concept, and even a mixed concept. This way, they can cater to everyone of every preference, style, and taste.

Conclusion

You might not keep the floor plan in mind when house shopping or renovating your current home. However, it’s one of the most important aspects of ensuring your home is right for you. From closed concept, to open concept, to a custom floor plan, each of these concepts are quite different from one another and can surely change the entire vibe and functionality of your interior.
